Ted Nugent Pleads Guilty to Illegally Killing Black Bear
April 22, 2012
Update: Ted Nugent has commented on his guilty plea in an interview with Glenn Beck. Click here to watch the video.
Famed rocker and outdoorsman Ted Nugent has filed a plea agreement in the U.S. District Court in Anchorage, Alaska for a case in which he is alleged to have illegally harvested a black bear. According to the terms of the agreement, Nugent will plead guilty to one count of transporting an illegally hunted bear.
The court documents and plea agreement state that Nugent was filming an episode of his television show on Alaska’s Sukkwan Island in 2009 when he was hunting near a bait pile set to attract bears. During the hunt Nugent shot a bear with an arrow which he “Failed to locate and harvest.” Four days later, he shot and killed another black bear and moved it off the island.
Alaskan hunting laws stipulate that the bear Nugent wounded filled his limit, making the second an illegal kill. By transporting the bear off the island Nugent violated the federal Lacey Act.
Nugent has yet to be sentenced but, according to Radar, prosecutors are recommending two years of probation and a ban on hunting and fishing in Alaska for one year plus a $10,000 fine.
Nugent has agreed to create a public service announcement that will, according to court documents, “discuss the importance of a hunter’s responsibility in know the rules and regulations of the hunting activities that they engage in.”

Sportsman Channel Showcases the True Test of Survival with Dropped: Project Alaska
December 12, 2011
Enter the minds of Chris and Casey Keefer as they show you how they survived 28 days in Alaska’s backcountry in the Sportsman Channel original production, Dropped: Project Alaska presented by Realtree. The Keefers were dropped in a remote part of Alaska where they had to pit their skills as hunters, woodsmen and anglers against an unforgiving landscape. Produced in conjunction with Rusted Rooster Media and InterMedia Outdoors, the original series will premiere exclusively on Sportsman Channel, the leader in outdoor TV for the American Sportsman, on Tuesday, December 27 at 9 pm ET with a special, one-hour episode.
Catch a sneak peek of the show by visiting http://thesportsmanchannel.com
“The Keefers are perfect for this show – they shared the network’s desire to do something that would be truly monumental in outdoor TV. What is a better way to do that than by creating a real-life journey of survival set amongst some of the most stunning scenery in the world?” said Greg Trager, VP of Programming and Production, Sportsman Channel.
When the Keefers were “dropped” in September, viewers were able to follow their daily progress via their satellite phone and SPOT messaging system. Their messages were posted on Sportsman’s Facebook page at http://facebook.com/SportsmanChannel and on Realtree’s page at http://facebook.com/RealtreeOutdoors
“We are using those SPOT messages and video snippets the Keefers shot themselves to provide our viewers a more rounded experience of what they didn’t see during the series,” said Trager.
The Keefers began their float with only 100 pounds of gear on each of them. They had no provisions in their backpacks – all their gear was for catching, trapping or killing their food and then preparing it.
“We are bringing our fans face-to-face with the reality of eating only what you can kill,” said Casey Keefer. “This was a true test of mind, body and soul – and you’ll see from our journals and behind-the-scenes footage we’ll share, that it was beyond anything we expected.”
As they winded their way over 110 river miles of the most perilous and game-rich country in the world, the brothers attempted to spot and stalk Caribou, Moose, Black Bear and Wolf. Plus, viewers will see these die-hard bowhunters fly fish.
“Many people will tell you their show is unlike any other – but honestly, THIS show is unlike any other. What outdoor TV producers purposely try to survive for 28 days in the wilderness?” said Chris Keefer.
“This Dropped project is one of the coolest things Realtree has ever been involved in,” said David Blanton, VP of TV/Video, Realtree. “When you’re left to fend for yourself in the middle of nowhere, that’s as real as it gets and, of course, viewers will really experience the thrill of the unknown right along with Kasey and Chris. It’s going to be fun to watch.”

The Zone Travels to Coastal Alaska for Unmatched Black Bear Hunting
September 21, 2011
New Berlin, WI – September 21, 2011 – Sportsman Channel, the leader in outdoor TV for the American Sportsman, is taking viewers of The Zone to the scenic and coastal shores of Alaska for intense black bear hunting. Hosts Tim Herald and James Brion will give viewers an up close and personal journey of spot and stalk black bear hunting around the Kenai Peninsula. The team from The Zone stalked the black bears with the “boat based” approach while hunting one of Alaska’s biggest game animals. After four days of intense hunting, both hosts harvested two black bears to finish off a successful and memorable journey. Don’t miss this extraordinary voyage on Wednesday, September 21 at 9:30 p.m. EST.
Typical of any Alaskan spring, the weather was predictably inconsistent and wide-ranging. Throughout their bear hunt, Herald and Brion encountered all forms of weather. They tracked their bears by spot and stalking on the coastal grass flats. When the tide went down, the bears came out to eat. After five hours of hunting, Herald took aim with his .300 rifle and tagged a 6.5 foot black bear. During the same hunt, Brion successfully harvested a similar black bear of his own with his .300 rifle.
“This was one of the most exciting bear hunts I’ve been on in a long time,” said Tim Herald, host, The Zone. “We really wanted to take in the splendor of Alaska and experience some great bear hunting. Hunting black bears never gets old and I know viewers will appreciate the bears and the scenery of the Kenai Peninsula.”
The Zone is that time and place in a hunt that finds your heart racing, your breathing shallow, and your adrenaline pumping. Join hosts James Brion and Tim Herald as they take you on some of the best North American big game hunts ever captured on film. James is a veteran outfitter and hunting consultant and Tim is a longtime outdoor writer and TV host. Together they bring decades of experience from traveling the globe in search of the best big game action to be found and share all their exciting adventures with Sportsman Channel’s viewers. This Magnum Global Media production will make you feel like you are truly part of the hunt. Alaska to Florida, Alberta to New Mexico, we’ll put you in “The Zone.”

Legendary Hunter, Larry Weishuhn, Reaches New Heights on Alaskan Brown Bear Hunt this Week on Sportsman Channel
August 29, 2011
New Berlin, WI – August 31, 2011 – There are brown bear’s and then there is the Alaskan bear Larry Weishuhn, host of A Hunter’s Life, harvested this week on Sportsman Channel, the leader in outdoor TV for the American Sportsman. Watch this can’t miss episode of A Hunter’s Life on Wednesday, August 31 at 10 p.m. EST.
Weishuhn and friend/guide, Wayne Woods, head to the coastal region of the Chugach Mountains of Alaska to search for some of the biggest brown bears in the area. After 10 days of hunting for a “big” brown bear, Weishuhn accomplished his hunting dream of taking a10-foot plus “squared” trophy brown bear.
The Alaskan brown bear hunt took time to develop, Weishuhn tells viewers during this episode. He and Woods set up their base camp in an area where there was a big herring spawn. After several days of glassing and stalking different sizes of bears, Weishuhn and Woods spotted “their bear” about 500 yards away. The team eventually moved to within 150 yards where Weishuhn waited patiently for his opportunity.
“I quickly set up my shooting sticks and waited for a decent angle and squeezed the trigger and hit him hard, said Larry Weishuhn, host, A Hunter’s Life. “The bear hardly shuttered as Wayne and I squeezed off two more shots. Moments later we found the bear and it took my breath away by its sheer size. I have finally accomplished taking a monstrous brown bear; it literally brought a tear to my eye.”
This unique Alaskan bear hunting episode of A Hunter’s Life was a long and exhaustive journey for Weishuhn and Woods and essentially involved hunting the bear to exclusion of others. The bear weighed an estimated 1100-1200 pounds and Boone & Crockett scored the bear’s skull at 28 2/8 inches. This could be a record, but the final score will have to wait until after the skull has dried.
